Your muscles run on mitochondria. They're the parts of your cells that turn fuel into usable energy, and after enough hard training sessions, some of them stop working as well as they should. It's a postbiotic, meaning your gut bacteria produce it after you eat ellagitannin-rich foods like pomegranate, walnuts, and certain berries.1Â The problem is that how much Urolithin A your gut actually produces varies a lot from person to person, depending on which bacteria you happen to have. Supplementing with Urolithin A directly skips that variability and gets a consistent amount into your system regardless of your gut composition.
What the Studies Actually Found
Two trials worth knowing about:
- In a 4-month randomized trial in middle-aged adults, Urolithin A supplementation was associated with meaningful increases in muscle strength and aerobic capacity, along with lower markers of cellular inflammation, compared to placebo.2
- In a more recent trial with highly trained male distance runners during an altitude training camp, Urolithin A supplementation was associated with lower perceived exertion and reduced markers of muscle damage after hard training, along with a modest increase in aerobic capacity. It did not produce a statistically significant improvement in time trial performance.3
Worth being straight about that second point: Urolithin A didn't make elite runners run faster in a controlled trial. What it did was help them recover with less residual damage and perceived effort, which matters more over a training block than over a single session. That's a recovery story, not a magic-bullet performance story, and we'd rather tell you that than round it up.
The Dose Question
